As digital modern communication lays the foundation for our new relationships, has the unique touch and feel of personal contact grown tired from public space and retreated to the bedrooms of our adult population? With the addition of words like "unfriend" and "sexting" to our vocabulary, is it possible to capture human emotion through digital expression? The unique though now very private human touch in our digital age is explored in Donna Cleary's "The X Spot" an exhibition of cross hatched charcoal drawings.
"The X Spot clearly parlays a direct link between the X generation and the new human interaction that has been birthed with it." states gallery director David Kesting. "In this exhibition Donna Cleary uses a classical approach to figurative illustration to dialog the intimacy promised in online dating testimonials."
The X Spot explores our society as being dependent on social media for the building blocks of relationships, pausing the spectrum of human feelings associated with intimacy. In this collection of charcoal drawings, the personal emotions of love, rejection, ecstasy and even joy are returned to a very public forum.
In this first solo exhibition by artist Donna Cleary, The X Spot embodies the range of emotions that relationships possess. In Crash Dummies, 2009 charcoal on paper, an optimistic joy is found by a couple where the distresses of a relationship are worked out in Polarized, Charcoal on Paper, 2009.
"For me," explains the artist, "these images explore modern relationships in the context of contemporary communication, which plays havoc with the notion of identity and intimacy. In an increasingly digitalized world, communication is instantaneous, fragmented, illusory and often anonymous. It is free of the body language and interpersonal engagement present in these images. While celebrating the classic techniques of cross-hatching and sumi ink painting, these images live in the present. United with contemporary issues and technology, they remind us that despite the frantic pace of technological discovery, some things transcend time.”
Leo Kesting Gallery invites you to join us in unveiling Donna Cleary's first solo exhibition with a reception for the artist on Thursday, January 14th from 7:00 until 10:00 pm and then running daily until February 7th.

New York (February 5, 2009) - Leo Kesting teams up again with other cutting edge galleries to present Fountain New York, the alternative art exhibition known for presenting avant garde artworks. Set up at Pier 66 for its latest installment Fountain takes place during the Armory weekend March 5 - 8. Fountain is a guerrilla-style art event, dubbed by many as the “Anti Art Fair” for its brash, off-the-wall offerings of non-traditional art exhibitions in the art fair environment.
Leo Kesting Gallery will be presenting artworks from our 2008-2009 artists line up with highlights from Jason Douglas Griffin, Jonny Fenix, Ray Sell, Brian Leo and newcomer Donna Cleary. With a spacious 500 square foot booth Leo Kesting Gallery ensures a strong installation of premier works from the galleries forth most talents.
Fountain’s venue, Pier 66 a 12,000 square-foot complex with both interior and exterior exhibition areas, is adjacent to all the major New York exhibitions.
"The beauty of Fountain is how much it supports young independent galleries like us," states gallerist John Leo. "Being able to work with other curators like Glowlab, Ad Hoc Art, McCaig-Welles and Front Room encourages us and our artists to make maximum impact on the art enthusiast who will be in town during the New York art fair weekend."
Fountain New York 2009 opens March 5 with a VIP - Press Preview then opens to the public for 11am until 7pm Friday - Sunday March 6 - 8. There will be a reception for the artists on Friday, March 6th from 7pm until midnight.
Artnet – the most widely read art site on the web – describes Fountain: “Likeability and chutzpah used to be what art was about. That, and a little guerrilla mentality, which you had at Fountain in spades. This is the place where you reminisce about the good old days, when you did it yourself, when inspiration and magic struck like a bolt from the blue. Here at Fountain, the artists and dealers are hungry and they welcome all visitors warmly. They are having fun and that’s the vibe. I felt like sitting down, having a beer, and hanging.”
Plum – “Extreme, grassroots, and black sheep are names that perhaps best describe Fountain. While other art exhibits are puppets to corporate culture, this show keeps it as real as they come.

The ethereal beyond, sophomoric teenage romance, true love rejected and childhood memories are the subject of "True Love is Fleeting" the new exhibition opening at Leo Kesting Gallery February 12. The collection showcases new artworks from Diane Dwyer, Brenda Buck, Nick Dyball and Donna Cleary.
"The hyper commercialization of American holidays has pigeonholed the concept of love into 90 min romantic comedies or isolated to the second week of February. Love is an inspiration in both art and culture," states gallerist John Leo.
In 'True Love is Fleeting' four artists look at separate views of love . The main floor will exhibit Diane Dwyer's lovingly rendered oil paintings bringing to view the abandoned afterlife in an surreal fashion, capturing a sunken moment. Exhibited along side Brenda Buck's large scale Polaroid paintings which bring us back to childhood innocence and the unconditional love that family provides.
On the gallery's second floor, extensive mural work by Nick Dyball highlight the watercolor narrative of carefree adolescent romance on Coney Island's boardwalk, a lifestyle where everything and nothing is taken seriously. Donna Cleary's charcoal figures finalize the exhibition by detailing the growth process of relationships, when love is no longer the pivot of a relationship and succumbs to the sometimes inevitable end. When age and beauty are at the heart of the matter and disinterest abounds.
"Donna Cleary's mono transfer prints, presented en mass sewn together as a curtain, present the viewer an illustrated process of picking up the fabric of one life when true love is rejected." explains Gallerist David Kesting.

Diane Dwyer
This work is about transformation on a few levels. The paintings are based on underwater photos of battleships (sunken by atomic testing in the 40's) that have been converted into cozy deep sea condos by saltwater, algae, and mollusks. The monochromatic photos I work from are found online, rescued and reconstructed as oil paintings. I'm interested in what happens when a disturbing remembrance, like the skeleton of a warship, is described in rich and vibrant color. These relics of destruction, changed the first time by the sea into something useful, are transformed yet again by the power of color into something else entirely.
Diane was educated at, and has shown throughout New York City, San Francisco, Lacoste France, Barcelona, Los Angles and Miami. She has received critical acclaim in the 2007 issue of the Village Voice. She graduated from university of Toledo, Ohio. Diane lives and works in New York.

There is no substitute for the often taken-for-granted relationship. These images explore the complex psychology inherent in this most fundamental element of human existence. As much about what is included in the imagery as what is not, they also address the notion of identity and intimacy in the context of an increasingly digitalized world where communication is instantaneous, fragmented, illusory and often anonymous.
Donna has been reviewed extensively in publications such as:

My work can be described as a cross between an acid flashback and a wet dream. It's an adolescent narrative where everything and nothing is taken seriously. Stranger than fiction, each piece is based on a photo I've taken, documenting such places and times as the Coney Island Mermaid Parade, New York City during St. Patty's Day, and the pub culture of London. Imbedded within the scenes are images from a variety of sources, such as local awnings and 19th century illustrations. These images work in tangent with the scene to form a stream of consciousness narrative. I depict these vignettes of counter-culture through the illusory haze of memory, perceptions, local surroundings, and inebriation that so often accompany them.
Nick has shown with the gallery since 2007 and is a founding member of the Bird Beak Group, a collective of artists who showcase their work in mass through out New York City.
Brenda Buck

Exhibited: New York
My father worked for Polaroid, so my childhood is documented in hundreds of little instant pictures. I often use these images as reference for rendering exercises. The first was doing "instant paintings". Taking the images and reproducing them in one sitting, small format, in a series of 20. I am now making the images big (44x55) in a series of 11. The inherent humor of the small-thing-made-large is an appealing feature of this new series, but the choice of the large format goes beyond novelty. I have both preserved and enhanced the white space as a frame. The Polaroid shape is iconic, but the space is embellished with writing and collage rather than left blank. Being that I am no longer a unselfconscious child, the person featured in the painting is more like a character in a story and less like my self. The scene depicted is as mysterious to me as it is to the viewer. In painting, I am allowed to reanimate the old object, imbue the figures with life, and bring the child back from the dead.

New York (November 5, 2008) – Leo Kesting Gallery announces its participation in Fountain Miami, the alternative art exhibition known for presenting cutting-edge independent galleries, during Art Basel weekend this December 3-7.
Fountain's venue, a dramatic 8000 square-foot industrial warehouse complex at 25th St and North Miami Ave has both interior and exterior exhibition areas. Fountain is also adjacent to the Wynwood exhibitions of Aqua, Pulse, NADA, Photo Miami and the Rubell Collection. "The Leo Kesting booth will be approximately 700 square feet with 30 foot tall ceilings, a space similar to our Manhattan gallery, and will allow for a true installation of the best works we have showcased this year," stated gallery co-owner David Kesting.
Also sharing the Fountain Warehouse will be Glowlab from New York, Open Ground from Brooklyn, Yum Yum Factory from Brooklyn and Susan Radau from Miami. The showcase will also bring to light new artmedia groups like, ArtCards, ArtLog, Culture Hall, WhiteHot Magazine and M New York Art World.
"Fountain, with its independent flare, is the perfect environment for Leo Kesting's artists," explains co-owner John Leo. "Expect high-lights of our installation to include Jonny Fenix, Ray Sell, Brian Leo, Shawn Bishop Leo, Diane Dwyer and Jason Douglas Griffin. Each of those artists produced solo exhibitions with us in 2008 enjoying critical success and consistant sales.”
The gallery will also showcase select works from: David Tree, Nick Dyball, Donna Cleary, Casey Porn, James Turek and Alison Berkoy.
Artnet – the most widely read art site on the web – describes Fountain: "Likeability and chutzpah used to be what art was about. That, and a little guerrilla mentality, which you had at Fountain in spades. This is the place where you reminisce about the good old days, when you did it yourself, when inspiration and magic struck like a bolt from the blue. Here at Fountain, the artists and dealers are hun-gry and they welcome all visitors warmly. They are having fun and that's the vibe. I felt like sitting down, having a beer, and hanging.
" Fountain was launched in March 2006 in New York in an effort to leverage support for independent galleries overlooked by the larger, corporate-sponsored art fairs. The name "Fountain" is a nod to Marcel Duchamp's controversial sculpture which shook up the art world when it was rejected by the Society of Artists' exhibition in 1917. Similarly, in defiant contrast with The Armory Show, Art Basel Miami Beach, Pulse, Scope and the numerous other international art fairs, Fountain has received wide public support and critical acclaim for its experimental slant. In form and spirit, the artwork exhibited at Fountain reflects the avant-garde attitude of the Dada art movement, while attracting the attention of the international clientele and top collectors who attend the more traditional fairs.
A VIP/Press preview of the booth will take place on Wednesday Morning Dec 3 from 10am until Noon and then again on Thursday Morning December 4 from 9am until noon. A reception for the artist will take place on Friday December 5 from 7pm until Midnight.
From its origins as Capla Kesting Fine Art in Brooklyn, the Leo Kesting Gallery launched in 2003 and developed an aggressive campaign to introduce new figurative artists to collectors and art supporters. Leo Kesting offers the art viewing public an opportunity to see forthcoming talents in an intimate setting where undiscovered, cutting-edge artists are presented to the contemporary art scene.

A show about women by women organized by Julie Oakes of Headbones, the drawers in Toronto, Canada.
The opening is February 16, 2008 and will feature 12 pieces by Donna Cleary as well as Louis Bourgeous, Judy Chicago, Carolee Shneemann, Aleks Bartosik, Guerilla Girls, Donna Kriekle, Julie Oakes, Allyson Mitchell, Robin Twees, Betty Tompkins and Monika Weiss.
Julie Oakes describes the exhibition: "This exhibition of works on paper is curated by a woman who has looked towards other women and applauded their efforts to maintain their place and dignity of gender in a profession traditionally the domain of men. The work in this exhibition exemplifies the fact that women have staked a self conscious claim within this nourishing field of dreams and in doing so broken ground that grew a different, female form of artistic avatar. Often political in approach, women have used their bodies, their intuition, their ability to nurture and multi-task and their grand operatic voices to shatter many a glass tower. In this Valentine month, WWW.WOMEN follows on the day of paper hearts and cliché promises with a spectacular show of solid womanhood."
